Classical Ballet

Steps Dance Studio’s is one of the Philippines’ premier ballet schools producing top-caliber dancers of highest international standards.

Our Classical Ballet training is based on the Royal Academy of Dance syllabus, which began in England. The Royal Academy of Dance is an international teacher training and examining organization for classical ballet whose aim is to develop the highest possible standards of teaching.

PROGRAMME OF TRAINING

The Royal Academy of Dance provides two distinct training pathways in classical ballet. These are called the Grade & Major programmes. Both involve the study of particular syllabi and in both pathways progress and achievement is measured by examination.

At each stage of training, the level of technical expertise is within the grasp of students who, through a balanced and progressive programme of study, are sympathetically and expertly helped towards an increasingly sound understanding of the principles of movements and fundamentals of classical ballet.

Classical ballet consists of three interrelated elements: Technique, Music and Performance. All these are ingredients and indeed expectations of teaching and dancing at the highest level.

THE GRADED SYLLABUS

The Graded Syllabus consists of three different sections or categories: Classical, Free Movement and Character.

The classical work is the foundation and the most important part of the Graded Syllabi. The free movement section incorporates movements in common with other dance styles such as Natural Movement, Contemporary-based dance and Greek dance.

Character dance is the theatrical presentation of national dance using original ethnic dance and music, which has been freely adapted for the theatre. The three styles – Hungarian, Russian and Polish – were selected because of their historic importance in the development of the traditional full-length classical ballets.

MAJOR SYLLABUS

The Major Syllabus is the continuation of classical ballet with the introduction of Pointe work for females. These syllabi have been designed to give the necessary training to students wishing to study seriously with a possible view to follow a career in dance or dance-related subjects.

Students who wish to study the Major Syllabus should have the type of body which can respond to demanding study. For example, a relatively proportionate, flexible physique with a degree of rotation in the hip socket necessary for the increased range of movement. Students must also be able to concentrate for long periods of time and be able to accept and welcome constructive criticism and correction.

EXAMINATION

Examinations offer students a challenge to show their understanding of the work. They are open to all students studying the Grade and Major syllabi and are tests of knowledge in relation of the level in question. Students must meet the criteria set down in the relevant section of the Standards Prospectus and therefore demonstrate they can confidently proceed to the next level.

All candidates will pass an Examination if the required standard has been attained. If successful, the Examiner will award one of the five classifications based on the performance seen on the day, in accordance with the established criteria.

ASSESSMENT

The Royal Academy of Dance believes that participation in ballet should be available to all young people and is therefore anxious to incorporate into its system all those who, for various reasons, and a particular time, may not be able to cope with the formal Examination requirements. For these students, Assessments offer programmes of work, which can be matched to their physical ability or pace of learning, leading to a sense of achievement and self-esteem, which can equal that of those passing Examinations.

Assessments are considered appropriate for:

• Students attending schools where ballet tuition is included in the curriculum and where the time allocated is generally less than a ballet school

• Students whose attendance has been irregular due to a variety of circumstances

• Schools where, for a variety of reasons, the teacher has not been able to devote the usual amount of time to Examination preparation

• Late starters

• Students who may be physically, cognitively or emotionally challenged

The standard of achievement is not measured in specific categories indicating levels of success, but instead a written report will indicate to the candidate some of the strengths and less strong areas of his or her performance. All students are awarded a Certificate of Participation.

There are seven Grade Assessments levels from Pre-Primary to Grade V and the content is based on the relevant grade.
